Cena y fiesta final!

Después de un mes lleno de experiencias y emociones, llegó el día que nadie quería que llegara. No vamos a negar que las despedidas fueron duras, pero estamos seguros de que cuando recuerden todo lo vivido en este programa esbozarán una sonrisa enorme.

Durante el día de ayer, los chicos tuvieron tiempo para recoger todo y descansar para la noche. Después, todos los alumnos se pusieron guapos para la cena final en la que cada profesor dedicó unas bonitas palabras para sus alumnos y entregó el premio de las clases.

After a month full of experiences and joy, the day arrived that everyone was dreading. We won’t deny that the goodbyes were difficult, but we are certain when they look back on what they lived this month, that it will be with the biggest of smiles.

Yesterday was a day of packing and last minute trips into town. The students lounged around and spent quality time together with the sad realization that it was time to say goodbye. Then everyone got into their best looks in preparation for the final program dinner. At the dinner the professors gave out the class awards and everyone said a few words about the students and the program

Al terminar la cena, y después del último paseo por la Plaza Mayor, los chicos fueron sorprendidos con una gran fiesta que sirvió de broche final para este gran programa.

After dinner, and after a final stroll through the magnificent Plaza Mayor, the students were suprised by a party at a private venue that served as a thrilling end to this great experience.

Todo el equipo de administración estamos encantados con el grupo que ha estado con nosotros este 2019, y desde aquí les agradecemos toda su implicación y deseamos a todos lo mejor para su futuro.

Our whole team had been enamored of the group we have had this year, and we are grateful to them for their enthusiasm. We wish them all the best in the future.

¡Celebrando nuestros logros!

Hoy fue un día sin mucho movimiento para que todos tuvieran tiempo de terminar sus proyectos y preparase para las presentaciones. Pero ofrecimos un taller de abanicos y algunos participaron con entusiasmo. 

Today we had a day without lots of activities, to give the students time to finish their projects and to get ready for the presentations. However, we offered a fun workshop, so some participated with enthusiasm.

Finalmente, el día de las presentaciones ha llegado. Los estudiantes pudieron demostrar todo lo aprendido y logrado a través de un mes de paseos, visitas a monumentos,  charlas, discusiones, aprendizaje y todo…¡en español!

Finally, the day of the presentations have arrived. Students could show all what they learned through a month of wandering around, visits to museums, lectures, discussions, learning and everything…in Spanish!

Cultura y Cocina nos deleitó con tostas de jamón, tartas de nata y tortilla de patatas, huevo y cebolla. Explicaron el origen de la palabra “tapas” y como se preparan estos platillos.

Cultura y Cocina delighted us with ham toasts, cream cakes, and egg, potato and onion tortilla. They explained the origin of the word “tapas” and how to prepare them.

 

Estudios Globales recreó un debate de las Naciones Unidas sobre los habitantes del Sahara Occidental y su situación con Marruecos. Conversación Español A creó una revista donde los estudiantes escribieron artículos sobre los diferentes temas y lugares tocados en clase. Conversación Español B, creó un divertido video sobre la vida de los estudiantes en la Academia de España de Oxbridge. Culturas Hispánicas compartió un video donde los estudiantes recrearon la famosa obra La Celestina, que toma lugar en Salamanca.¡Fue muy divertido ver a los chicos en los papeles de Celestina, Calixto y Melibea!

Estudios Globales recreated a debate of the United Nations about the Western Sahara inhabitants and their situation with Maroco. Conversación Español A created a magazine where students wrote articles about the different topics and places they went over in class. Conversación Español B, created a funny video about their life in the Academia de España, Oxbridge. Culturas Hispánicas shared a video where students played out the famous “La Celestina”, that took place in Salamanca. It was very fun to see the students in the roles of Celestina, Calixto and Melibea!

Por su parte Medicina tomó un caso de estudio donde explicaron una intoxicación por regaliz que causó una hipopotasemia. La clase de Perfeccionamiento de español también compartió un video donde los chicos recrearon una situación legal, con jueces, abogados, fiscales y ¡un culpable! Fotografía mostró un PowerPoint donde cada uno mostró diez fotografías sobre un tema particular. ¡Vimos unas fotos bellísimas! Por último, la clase de Bellas Artes, también mostró a través de una presentación, todos los trabajos artísticos que hicieron, desde canvas pasando por cerámicas y dibujos.Vimos un nivel creativo increíble.

On the other hand, Medicina showed a study case where they explained the consequences of getting an intoxication through licorice. Perfeccionamiento class shared a video where students recreated a legal situation with judges, lawyers, prosecutors and..a guilty man! Fotografía showed a PowerPoint where each student showed ten pictures following a theme. We saw beautiful pictures! Lastly, Bellas Artes class showed also through a presentation, all the art work students did: drawings, pottery and canvas. We were in awe by their creativity.

Despedida de los profes y… ¡España tiene talento!

Mañana agridulce porque los chicos tuvieron su última clase principal.  Cultura y Cocina practicó para la presentación del proyecto final y luego recibieron un pequeño presente de su profesor. Culturas Hispánicas terminó el proyecto y luego fueron a la Chocolatería Valor a leer juntos un fragmento sobre Fray Luis de León. Estudios Globales discutió sobre Corea del Norte y la cuestión nuclear. Luego trabajaron en el proyecto final, analizando la empatía y la sociedad. La clase de Conversación terminó con el proyecto y luego visitó la Catedral. Para terminar comieron tapas en el Patio Cordobés. Por último, la clase de Perfeccionamiento también fue a la Catedral, a pedido de las estudiantes, y trabajaron en su proyecto final. 

Bittersweet morning, since it was the last major class for the students. Cultura y Cocina practiced the presentations of the final project and they got a small souvenir from their professor. Culturas Hispaánicas finished the project and went to Chocolatería Valor to read together a passage about Fray Luis de León. Estudios Globales discussed about North Korea and the nuclear issues. Then they worked on the final project while analyzing empathy and the society.  Conversation class finished the project and visited the Cathedral to end up then, eating tapas in the Patio Cordobés. Finally, Perfeccionamiento went to the Cathedral as well, since students asked to go, and worked on their final project.

 

 

Por la tarde jugaron Kahoot para demostrar cuanto saben del programa, del equipo y de sus propios compañeros. ¡Virginia, Charles y Marcus resultaron los ganadores!

In the afternoon, they play Kahoot to show how much they know about the program, the staff and their own friends. Virginia, Charles and Marcus were the winners!

 

 

¡Por la noche nos divertimos con el show de talentos! Los estudiantes se animaron a cantar, algunos profesores también. Hasta tuvimos un duo entre nuestra profesora Carmen y nuestra estudiante Molly, quienes cantaron una ranchera que se valió de una ovación por parte del público. 

At night we had lots of fun with the talent show! Students got excited to sing, and some teachers too. We even had a duo between our techer Carmen and our student Molly. They sang a “ranchera” that ended up with a standing ovation.

Terminando con las clases

Parece mentira que estemos en la recta final del programa, que los chicos sólo tengan una clase más de sus principales y que las complementarias hayan terminado hoy.  Cultura y Cocina tuvo un invitado, David Monaguillo, un chef que compartió con los estudiantes sus conocimientos y experiencias tanto como chef como consultor y asesor gastronómico. Muchas de las clases salieron a tomar un café o un helado juntos para celebrar el fin de las clases. La clase de fotografía visitó la catedral por la tarde y después fue a tomar unos batidos juntos. El profesor de la clase de Culturas Hispánicas, Javi, les regaló a sus alumnos una copia del libro Estudiantes en Salamanca, y la clase pasó un rato en la chocolatería El Valor leyendo una parte juntos. 

Por la tarde los alumnos aprovecharon que no hacía mucho calor para ir al parque y jugar a “captura la bandera”. ¡Ganaron los del equipo azul!

Por la noche los alumnos que había ganado más firmas a lo largo de todo el mes salieron para cenar con María y Teresa, nuestras directoras de actividades. Los alumnos podían recibir firmas de cualquier miembro del equipo, y también de sus profesores, por hacer algo especialmente bien en español, por hacer un buen esfuerzo, y por asisitir a todas las actividades programadas y hablar solo en español. Felicidades a Kessa, Molly, Melina, Kyndal, Lauren, Sydney, Angelica y Laura! ¡Bien hecho!

It seems incredible that we are in the last few days of the program and the students only have one more major class, while their minor class ended today. Cooking and Culture had a guest, David Monaguillo, a chef who shared with the students his knowledge and experiences both as a chef and as a gastronomic consultant and advisor. Many of the clases went out to have coffee or ice cream together to celebrate the last days of class. Photography visited the cathedral in the afternoon and then went for milkshakes together. Javi, the teacher of Culturas Hispánicas, gave his students a copy of Students in Salamanca and the class spent a while in the café El Valor reading a part of it together.

In the afternoon the students took advantage of the slightly cooler weather to go to the park and play capture the flag. The blue team won!

In the evening the students who had received the most signatures during the program went out for dinner with María and Teresa, our activities directors. The students could receive signatures for doing something particularly well in Spanish, for making a strong effort, and for attending all the programmed activities and speaking only in Spanish while there. Congratulations Kessa, Molly, Melina, Kyndal, Lauren, Sydney, Angelica and Laura! Well done!

¡El Escorial, un teleférico y una muralla!

Ayer los alumnos fueron de viaje de nuevo. Primero fueron al Escorial, un castillo un poco al norte de Madrid que es a la vez un palacio, un monesterio, un colegio y un panteón para todos los reyes de España desde el siglo XVI hasta hoy en día. ¡Aprendieron la historia de este famoso lugar y unas palabras nuevas como aposentos (un conjunto de habitaciones reales que incluía el dormitorio, el despacho y el oratorio).

Después del Escorial bajaron a Mardid y subieron al teleférico que les llevó hasta Casa de Campo, un gran parque en el centro de Madrid. Luego fueron al Centro de Arte del Matadero y al Centro Comercial al lado para relajarse durante unas horas y almorzar.

Para terminar el día pasaron por la ciudad de Ávila, que está entre Madrid y Salamanca, donde vieron la famosa muralla, que es una de las pocas murallas completas que queda en España. Pararon en el mirador de los Cuatro Postes para sacar unas fotos de la muralla antes de entrar en la ciudad para cenar. 

Yesterday the students went on their final field trip. First they visited the Escorial, a complex a little north of Madrid that is simultaneously a palace, monestery, school, and pantheon for all of the monarchs of Spain from the 16th century to the present. They learned about the history of this famous site and some new words like apostentos (a grouping of royal quarters that included the bedroom, office, and ortatory).

After the Escorial they went down to Madrid and rode the Skyline to Casa de Campo, a large park in in the center of Madrid. Then they went to the Matadero, a modern art complex and to the shopping mall nearby for a few hours to relax and have lunch.

To finish off the day they stopped in Ávila, which is between Madrid and Salamanca, where they saw the famous wall, which is one of the few complete walls that remain in Spain. They stopped at the Cuatro Postes lookout point to take some photos of the wall before entering the city for dinner.

Flamenco…y ¡olé!

Esta mañana los cursos siguieron con su ritmo habitual. Algunos tuvieron invitados especiales para hablar de diferentes temas relacionados con los tratados en clase. Las clases de Conversación, Perfeccionamiento y Estudios Globales escucharon una charla sobre el Franquismo en Salamanca y pasearon por donde se mantienen algunos símbolos. Medicina participó de un taller de suturas sobre manitas de cerdos.  La otra clase de Perfeccionamiento, vió diferencias entre las preposiciones “por y para” y otras estructuras gramaticales y también recibieron la visita de una experta en literatura latinoamericana y el feminismo. La clase de Cultura y Cocina, principal, preparó croquetas de bacalao, jamón, queso y otros ingredientes. 

This morning all classes continued with their regular schedule. Some had guest speakers to discuss topics related to what they already covered in class. The classes of Conversación, Perfeccionamiento and Estudios Globales listened to a lecture about Franquismo in Salamanca and then they toured to see the remaining symbols of those times. Medicina participated on a suture workshop, where they practiced on pig´s trotters. The other Perfeccionamiento class went over the differences between the prepositions “por and para” and other grammatical structures and they received the visit of an expert on Latinamerican literature and feminism. The major class, Cultura y Cocina, prepared “croquetas” with cod, ham, cheese and other ingredients.

Por la tarde los alumnos siguieron con sus clases complementarias. La clase de Bellas Artes hizo unos cuadernos a mano. Tiñieron el papel, midieron el papel y el cartón y cosieron los cuadernos. ¡Salieron super bonitos! La clase de Cultura y Cocina fue a La Cocina Mágica para cocinar unas corquetas deliciosas hoy, como hizo la clase prinipal por la mañana. 

Después de la clase complementaria muchos alumnos asistieron a una charla de la cultura árabe dado por Luis, nuestro profesor de Estudios Globales. ¡Aprendieron a escribir sus nombres en árabe!

In the afternoon the students continued with their minor classes. The Fine Arts class made hand-made notebooks. They dyed the paper, measured the paper and cardboard, and sewed the notebooks together. They turned out really well! The Cooking and Culture class went to the restaurant, La Cocina Mágica, where they cooked some delicious croquets, as did the major class this morning.

After the minor class many of the students attended a workshop on Arab culture given by Luis, our Global Studies teacher. They also learned to write their names in Arabic!

Después de la cena los alumnos salieron juntos a un espectáculo de flamanco en la Hospedería Fonseca donde pudieron ver este arte intenso y emocional representado por bailarines profesionales y coordinado por coreógrafos premiados. ¡Lo pasaron a tope!

After dinner the students went out together to a Flamanco show at the Hospedería Fonseca where they were able to see this intense and emotional art performed by professional dancers and coreographed by prize-winning coreographers! They had a blast!

Preparando los proyectos finales y más diversión.

Los estudiantes han continuado sus prácticas del lenguaje a través de los imponentes rincones de Salamanca. Culturas Hispánicas estuvo en el Huerto de Calixto y Melibea preparando su proyecto final en los escenarios naturales de esa obra clásica de la literatura española. La clase de Conversación practicó algunas estructuras gramáticales y luego salieron a tomar algo a Cervantes, en la Plaza Mayor. Cultura y Cocina continuaron con la preparación de postres. Esta vez hicieron crepes, pero los combinaron con salsas dulces y saladas. Medicina fue a un centro de investigación para analizar grupos sanguíneos, y conversaron sobre el verano, el riesgo de melanoma y la importancia de protegerse del sol. Por último Perfeccionamiento creó memes para practicar la gramática y empezaron a trabajar en el guión del proyecto final. El proyecto final también fue el centro de estudios globales y español. Luego conversaron en un café y visitaron un anticuario. 

Students have been practicing their language skills around the impressive corners of Salamanca. Culturas Hispánicas went to Huerto de Calixto y Melibea working on their final project on the natural scinery of this classic work of the Hispanic Literature. Conversación practiced some grammatical structures and then had a snack at Cervantes, a coffee place in the Plaza Mayor. Cultura y Cocina continued preparing desserts. They made crepes, but they tried sweet and savory sauces to combine them. Medicina went to a research center to analyze blood types.  Being summer, they also discussed melanoma and the importance of using sunscreen. Finally, Perfeccionamiento created memes to practice grammar and started the script of their projects. The final project was also the main topic of estudios globales and Spanish class. Then they chatted at a coffee shop and visited an antique shop.

 

Por la tarde los chicos disfrutaron de una actividad que requiere cierta destreza: escalada. ¡Se divirtieron mucho y se dieron aliento unos a otros!

In the afternoon, students enjoyed an activity that requires certain skills: rock climbing. They had fun and they encouraged each other!

 

Por la noche asistimos todos a un evento teatral único y muy especial en Salamanca. El pequeño teatro “La Malhablada” donde los chicos en grupos pudieron ver una obra de teatro de 10 minutos. Esta vez fue un acto de magia…¡muy guay!

At night, we attended to a play event very special and unique in Salamanca. The small theatre “La malhablada” wehre students in groups could see a 10 minutes play. This time was a magic show…super cool!

Aprovechando el tiempo!

Día intenso el que tuvieron ayer los chicos, y es que esto se va acabando y hay que vivir esta experiencia al máximo.

Students had a very active day yesterday. This is coming to an end and we have to live this experience to the fullest.

Por la mañana nuestros alumnos de cultura y cocina fueron al obrador de Santa Lucía para preparar unas riquísimas tartas de San Marcos típicas de Salamanca. La clase de medicina aprendió a tomar la tensión y los alumnos de culturas hispánicas visitaron los edificios históricos de la Universidad de Salamanca. Por último los alumnos de perfeccionamiento y estudios globales realizaron una visita al convento de San Esteban, cuna del derecho de gentes, para poner en práctica lo aprendido en clase.

In the morning our students of “cultura y cocina” went to the Obrador de Santa Lucía to bake delicious San Marcos cakes typical of Salamanca. Medicine class learned to measure the blood presure and the culturas hispánicas´students visited historical buildings of the Universidad de Salamanca. Lastly the perfeccionamiento and estudios globales classes went to the Convento de San Esteban, place that gave birth to the fundamental human rights to practice what they learned in class.

Por la tarde, la clase de fotografía jugó al trivial con preguntas de fotografía y después realizaron fotos utilizando la técnica del “light painting”. Los alumnos de bellas artes realizaron escultura inspirada en la obra de Esteban Vicente y salieron entusiasmados de la clase. La clase de culturas hispánicas visitó el huerto de Calixto y Melibea y el Convento de las Dueñas, para entender mejor la obra de la Celestina leída en clase.

In the afternoon, photography class played a trivia and then took pictures using the “light painitng” teqniche. The arts students created an sculptured inspired in Esteban Vicente´s works, they went out of class very excited. The culturas hispánicas class visited the Huerto de Calixto y Melibea and the Convento de Las Dueñas, to understand better the work La Celestina.

Para terminar el día, nuestra profesora Carmen impartió una charla sobre las mujeres en la sociedad, el arte y la literatura que encantó a los alumnos. Después de esto se entregaron los premios y certificados de la Universidad de Salamanca a aquellos que acudieron con regularidad a las charlas de la misma, y para acabar, los chicos pudieron seguir disfrutando de la serie “La casa de papel” en la sala de televisión.

To finish the day. our teacher Carmen gave a presentation about women in society, the arts and literature, that students loved. Students then got their Universidad de Salamanca certificates for attending regularly to the USAL lectures. To end up the active day, students enjoyed another episode of “Money Heist” in our TV room.

Un domingo en el río

El domingo los alumnos fueron  al río Congosto para bañarse, relajarse y disfrutar de la naturaleza. Nadaron, jugaron al Uno y comieron una paella muy rica hecha para ellos por nuestro amigo Ángel. Por la noche volvieron a la residencia para ver otro capítulo de la serie enganchadora, La casa de papel. 

On Sunday the students all went to the Congosto river to take a dip, relax, and enjoy nature. They swam, played Uno, and ate a delicious paella prepared for us by our friend Ángel. In the evening they returned to the residence to watch another episode of the series that has them all hooked, Money Heist.

Un sábado de “Lunes de Aguas”

Esta mañana todas las clases se fueron a vivenciar una costumbre salmantina que se originó en el siglo XVI. La tradición se basa en que debido a la cuaresma de Semana Santa, la iglesia mandaba a las prostitutas a salir de la ciudad y quedarse al otro lado del Rio Tormes.  Regresaban a la ciudad el lunes siguiente a la terminación de las Pascuas y los estudiantes de la universidad organizaban grandes fiestas a orillas del rio. Por su naturaleza, fue prohibida en gran parte de la región pero en Salamanca, con el correr del tiempo se convirtió en una excusa para que familias y amigos se reunan junto al río para hacer picnics y comer hornazo, que es una empanada grande rellena de jamón y queso, o atún y pisto. Los estudiantes junto a sus profesores comieron hornazo junto al Rio Tormes. 

This morning all classes went to enjoy a Salmantina practice that originated on the 16th century. This tradition is based on the fact that due to Easter´s Lent, the church sent out to the other side of the Tormes River all the prostitues through those 40 days. They were allowed to come back on the Monday after the end of Easter and students organized big parties on the shores of the river. Due to its nature, was prohibited in most of the region, but in Salamanca it became an excuse for families and friends to enjoy pic-nics and to eat “hornazo” a big type of panini filled with ham and cheese or tuna and vegetables. Students and teachers ate “hornazo” next to the Tormes River.

Por la tarde los almunos asisiteron a un repaso del condicional con Emily y entonces disfrutaron de unos juegos de agua en el patio para refrescarse ¡Al final terminaron el día con un baile!

In the afternoon the students attended a review of the conditional tense with Emily before enjoying some water games on the patio to cool off. They finished off the day with a dance party!
