Elegy Written in a Cambridge Graveyard

Jeff Makowiak’s English Lit class toured Pembroke College where Thomas Gray resided until incessant student pranks drove him across the street to Peterhouse. The class read Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” and thought about class differences in terms of grave markers and grave sites. They then toured Peterhouse’s chapel and dining hall as well as the grounds. At the end of the day, indeed, ‘the paths of glory lead but to the grave.’
